Portfolio Submission
Submitting your Progress Reel

Rocket Sky is a portfolio-focused school, which ultimately means we focus on you the student, your development and your ability to showcase these skills on a professional quality demo reel.

The majority of 3D animated demo reels are bad. They're usually too long as most people think longer is better so they use 'fillers'and more than often the reels aren't structured properly. They may also have overly produced title segments where the animator's name and effects tarnish the actual animation on the reel. If a reel isn't engaging by the 10-15 second mark it's usually shut off. The trick is to establish the interest early, hold their attention and finish strong. makes sense, right? Here's how we do this-

1. Simple title segment

This is your name and contact info. Some people use effects software to create this portion and sometimes it ends up being indulgent or pretentious, and if the reel itself isn't strong it ends up an incredible fail. Be creative, be yourself but don't over do it. Everything in true art should be simple, including a title page for your reel.

2. Content

Unless it's a specialized reel showcasing a specific skill, your portfolio should consist of shots showcasing action, cycles, and  acting, and some quadruped action to showcase animal animation.

3. Length

A strong demo reel does not have to be long, 40 seconds of strong animation beats 2 minutes of mediocre animation every time. Do not feel you must include stuff just to increase the length. This is one of the most common problems with reels today.

3. Order

Your best work should be at the head and the tail, start and finish strong to leave a good impression.

This is your first attempt at designing your reel, which when done properly is a perfect reflection and representation of you not only as an artist but a person. It's the foundation or blueprint that you may use to update as you progress through the program.

You'll need an editing software to compile and render your reel, there are plenty of free versions available online if you don't have one. Through the school we receive a pretty fair discount on Adobe products.

Any questions please don't hesitate to ask!
